Who We Are, Where We Are

The Northumberland Hispanic Cultural Club Inc (NHCC) is an incorporated not-for-profit organization. It was established by the Latin Hispanic community in the County to provide a venue for its community members to enjoy and participate in Latin Hispanic culture. The club aims to promote Latin Hispanic culture and Heritage by holding events and, performances that showcase Latin American art, music, food and literature.

The club also aims to help and support new Canadians of Latin and Hispanic origin to adapt to their new home. Acknowledging that many people from Northumberland County escape winter by going to Latin America, the club aims to enrich this experience by connecting Northumberland residents to the growing Hispanic community in the region.

The NHCC is supported by over 55 paying members who have committed to supporting the objectives of the club.

Membership is open to anyone who is interested in:
  • Knowing more about Latin Hispanic culture.
  • Participating in cultural and heritage community events.
  • Easing the settlement process of new Canadians coming from Latin Hispanic countries  to Northumberland to study, work or live.

The NHCC governance is led by an elected Board of Directors. The organization marked its first anniversary of incorporation by holding its first general meeting on the 9th of February 2015.

NHCC Origins

Our Story
Northumberland Hispanic Cultural Club was founded by three Peruvian's, Rosa Ortega Tyrrell, Martha Hogan and Betty Harris. The group met every week to talk and interact with members of our community. Rosa shared with Martha and Betty the idea of a cultural organization, as she had long realized that there was a need to promote Hispanic-American culture. Rosa's vision came in 2011 when she organized serial concerts with Latin American artists, helping residents of our community discover the richness of our culture and what our countries have to offer.

The concerts were successful, government leaders and community members of different backgrounds began to take notice of our community.

The group worked together, quickly developing the project, but realized that they would need more help growing the organization. So they invited another long time Canadian resident, Ligia Sánchez from Colombia and Betty's husband Murray Harris to join the first Board of Directors and help establish the organization.

In addition, members of the community from different backgrounds have joined the NHCC, becoming enthusiasts of Latin Hispanic culture. The participation of non-Hispanics, also helps us better understand their culture, a win for all.

Proudly Hispanic

The term Hispanic (Spanish: hispano or hispánico, Galician: hispánico, Asturian: hispanu, Basque: hispaniar, Catalan: hispà, hispàno) broadly refers to the people, nations, and cultures that have a historical link to Spain. It commonly applies to countries once colonized by the Spanish Empire in the Americas and Asia, particularly the countries of Latin America and the Philippines. It could be argued that the term should apply to all Spanish-speaking cultures or countries, as the historical roots of the word specifically pertain to the Iberian region. It is difficult to label a nation or culture with one term, such as Hispanic, as the ethnicity, customs, traditions, and art forms (music, literature, dress, culture, cuisine, and others) vary greatly by country and region. The Spanish language and Spanish culture are the main traditions.
Hispanic originally referred to the people of ancient Roman Hispania, which roughly comprised the Iberian Peninsula, including the contemporary states of Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar.
